چکیده

UNLABELLED Aims/Introduction:  Serum glycated albumin (GA) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) are influenced by plasma glucose levels, and are used for monitoring chronic glycemic control in diabetic patients. Both glycated proteins are known to be influenced by various factors other than plasma glucose levels. In the present study, we examined the effects of hypertriglyceridemia on them. MATERIALS AND METHODS   The present study comprised 273 non-diabetic men. They were grouped into men with normotriglyceridemia (serum triglyceride [TG] <150 mg/dL) and those with hypertriglyceridemia (serum TG ≥150 mg/dL). RESULTS   Body mass index (BMI) and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were significantly higher in the 160 men with hypertriglyceridemia than the 113 men with normotriglyceridemia. In men with hypertriglyceridemia, as compared with those with normotriglyceridemia, fasting plasma glucose, 2-h plasma glucose after 75 g oral glucose tolerance test, and HbA1c were significantly higher. By contrast, serum GA was significantly lower in men with hypertriglyceridemia. BMI-adjusted serum GA was also significantly lower in these men. In a multivariate analysis, serum TG was an inverse explanatory variable for serum GA. CONCLUSIONS   Serum GA is low in relation to plasma glucose levels in men with hypertriglyceridemia. This might be caused by increased albumin metabolism associated with hypertriglyceridemic state. (J Diabetes Invest, doi: 10.1111/j.2040-1124.2010.00049.x, 2010).

Adenosine Deaminase Activity and its Relation with Glycated Hemoglobin and Uric Acid in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

Abstract Objective: It has been reported that adenosine deaminase (ADA) is a good marker for insulin function but its clinical significance in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is not yet characterized. This study aims to assess the association of ADA with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and uric acid (UA) in T2DM patients. Materials and Methods: The study population consisted of 120 subjects divi...

A1C but Not Serum Glycated Albumin Is Elevated in Late Pregnancy Owing to Iron Deficiency

OBJECTIVE A1C levels have been shown to be elevated in relation to glycemia in late pregnancy, although the precise mechanisms remain undetermined. We hypothesized that iron deficiency is involved in the A1C increase in late pregnancy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS In study 1, A1C, serum glycated albumin, erythrocyte indexes, and iron metabolism indexes were determined in 47 nondiabetic pregnan...

Comparing multiple measures of glycemia: how to transition from biomarker to diagnostic test?

The underlying pathophysiology of diabetes varies, but all patients share a common a metabolic derangement of carbohydrate metabolism, which causes hyperglycemia. Many patients with diabetes develop debilitating complications, ranging from retinopathy and nephropathy, to myocardial infarction and stroke. The accumulated evidence reveals that reducing an increased glucose concentration, as docum...

Cytotoxic Effect of \" Glycated Albumin-Transition Metal Ion\" on Rat Hepatocyte Suspension

Background: Combination of glycation and oxidation is associated with diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of glycated proteins in presence of transition metal ions on production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in rat hepatocyte suspension. Methods: Glycated albumin was prepared by incubation of bovine serum albumin with 100 mM glucose in 0.3 M phosphate buffer a...

Blood glucose levels in peritoneal dialysis are better reflected by HbA1c than by glycated albumin.

A recent study indicated that, compared with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), glycated albumin (GA) provides a more accurate assessment of glycemic control in diabetic patients on hemodialysis. However, the suitability of GA for this purpose in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients is questionable. We measured blood glucose, GA, HbA1c, serum albumin, protein losses in urine and dialysate, protein catab...
